Hello Reader

Trees have been my constant companions. Whether living in basement suites or high-rise apartments, I've always found a way to connect with them, whether it was a Poplar canopy or a Fir trunk outside my window. Even living on a houseboat, I gazed across the bay at mountains covered in forest.

Now, looking out my current window, I see a forest covered Knapp Island. Recently, I joined fellow Nature and Forest Therapy Guides there for the first time. Guide and Shinto Priest Ann Evans hosted a half-day gathering where we experienced being guided instead of guiding.

Shinto offers a beautiful framework for forest bathing. Japan's indigenous faith centers on kami—spirits that live in all things. Mountains, rivers, trees, animals, people. Everything holds sacred presence. The practice emphasizes living in harmony with the natural world. And, with no central book or founder, it is just deep reverence for nature, purity, community, and ancestors.

For guides who spend our time leading others in forest bathing, being participants felt profound. We could simply receive. Simply be present, and simply remember why this work matters so deeply.

something to watch

Marshmallow Laser Feast is a UK-based artist collective that tell stories through multi-sensory journeys that combine immersive experiences with XR and film to remind us we are part of something vast and interconnected.

One of their works, Breathing with the Forest, commissioned by Emergence Magazine, is something you can experience from your own computer. To feel it more fully, dim the lights, turn up your sound, and allow yourself to be immersed. Simply receive. Simply be present. Simply remember.

At the heart of this piece is the Ceiba Pentandra, or Kapok tree. Towering 150 feet or more above the rainforest canopy, it is an elder of the forest, offering its branches as home to countless orchids, mosses, insects, and birds. By growing above the canopy, it gathers enough light in abundance to share with others.

Rainforests are part of our life support system. They gift us clean air, fresh water, fertile soil, nourishing food, rich biodiversity, stability, and renewal. When these cycles falter, we falter too.

Through ecological surveys, LiDAR scans, and field recordings, Marshmallow Laser Feast translated the invisible into art—capturing the sounds of wind, water, animals, and the density of trees in three-dimensions. The result is a forest you don’t just see—you sense.

And within it, a massage, a reminder: our future depends on remembering the truth of our interconnection. We are not outside of the forest. We are breathing with it.

something to listen to

Since the summer of 2020, RE:TV has produced more than 200 short films covering everything from fusion to food waste. Working with local crews all over the world, they've interviewed some of the world's most visionary change-makers, entrepreneurs, engineers, technologists, scientists, academics and agriculturalists.

Founded in 2020 by His Majesty King Charles III, then the Prince of Wales. RE:TV is inspired by The King’s long-standing commitment to nature, and to provide a platform for the growing community of change-makers whose ingenuity is helping to create a better future for people and planet.

"We've got to come together as a world on this. I feel very strongly that we have to develop an approach which puts nature at the centre of the whole process. There is a better world out there. We can operate our industries far better. There is real hope, but we've just got to
get our act together and we've got to remember that the natural world is what sustains us."

an invitation

Every season teaches us a lesson: from the stillness of winter to the abundance of summer. Tuning in gives us a living roadmap for our personal journeys.

Take 15 minutes for yourself, (indoors or outside) and f ind a feature in your surroundings – it could be a tiny leaf, the intricate texture of tree bark, a delicate spiderweb, or a patch of moss.

Get incredibly close and inspect it with genuine wonder and curiosity. Notice every line, every color, every tiny detail.

  • How does it feel to touch?
  • What emotions arise from this close encounter?

After your detailed exploration, slowly begin to "zoom out," gradually expanding your view to take in the bigger picture of the landscape around that feature.

  • How do these seemingly different perspectives—the tiny detail and the grand scene—connect and relate to each other?

Practice this invitation a couple of times a week. And if you prefer, write down your findings in a journal. Enjoy!
